The New England Farm Workers Council will again hold an Oktoberfest with the
assistance of The Student Prince Restaurant. The event starts at 5:00PM on
Friday, September 24, when Herbie Flores from the Farm Workers Council and the
Hoher Lord Burgermeister von Springfield (sometimes known as Mayor Dominic Sarno)
will tap the first keg of Spaten Oktoberfest beer. The festivities continue at
5PM on Saturday, Sept 25. The Oktoberfest is on
Hampden Street
in Downtown Springfield Massachusetts on the west side of Main Street between Fort Street and the Paramount Theatre. The
Jolly Kopperschmidts (www.jollyks.com),
one of the premier oompa bands in the Northeast, will provide traditional
Oktoberfest music. We hope to have some strolling accordion players and perhaps
some music from the beautiful
island
of Puerto Rico. Music will
be provided from 5:30 until 10 each night.
A variety of victuals will be available for purchase, including chef
carved steamship round roast beef sandwiches, a variety of sausages and kraut,
Pollo Asado (roast chicken), appetizers such as Fried Camembert Cheese and
Potato Pancakes and, for the sweet tooth, apple kuchen and fried dough. Tickets
to the event are $10.00 and include a souvenir stein of Liquid Gold from
Munich
~ Spaten Oktoberfest Beer. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the restaurant
on 8 Fort Street,
Springfield. Advance tickets are
$9.00
Other beverages will be available
including a variety of wines, soft drinks and Coors light beer. The main tent is
non-smoking. There will be a cigar tent with cigars sold by Blue Collar Cigar of
East Longmeadow. Credit cards are not accepted at the event, but there are
several ATM’s in the area.
Parking will be provided at the
Springfield Parking Authority lot located under Rt. 91for a special rate of
$5.00 if you enter the lot between 4 and 8 PM. Other parking areas are the lot
on Fort Street. and Columbus Center
Parking Garage on Worthington
Street.
The Student Prince and Fort Restaurant, which is celebrating 75 years of
operation, has been named as one of Gourmet Magazine’s 25 legendary restaurants.
The restaurant has celebrated Oktoberfest inside the establishment since the
early 1950’s.
Several years ago Herbie Flores and the manager of the restaurant went to
Munich to enjoy the Bavarian Oktoberfest and decided that downtown
Springfield
needed a similar event to mark the end of summer. History does not record how
much beer had been consumed when that decision to create a Hispanic Germanic
fest was reached.
